In December 1961, the Outrigger Inn came to life following the merger of the Skyway and Doctors Motels. 1962 – St. Louis Cardinals’ Spring Training

In 1962, the Outrigger Inn became a pivotal symbol in the fight for racial equality in baseball. Facing pressure for integration, Cardinals owner Gussie Busch arranged for integrated housing for both Black and white players, including legends like Jackie Robinson, Bill White, Bob Gibson, and Curt Flood. The following year, in 1964, the Inn made history when it became the Cardinals' Spring Training home under manager Red Schoendienst, offering accommodations for all players and their families. This bold move ended segregation in the team’s spring training and set a new standard for racial equality in sports.
